IMII Awards 2025 Al Shpyth Scholarship for Environmental Excellence

The International Minerals Innovation Institute (IMII) is proud to announce that Logan Englot, a Renewable Resource Management student at the University of Saskatchewan, has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the Al Shpyth Scholarship for Environmental Excellence.

The scholarship was created to honour the impactful career of Al Shpyth, who served as Executive Director of IMII for nine years before retiring in 2025. Throughout his career, Shpyth made significant contributions to environmental law, public policy, and community engagement in northern Saskatchewan. His work supported approvals for three major uranium projects and helped create the Northern Mines Monitoring Secretariat and Environmental Quality Committees—initiatives that strengthened community involvement in the uranium industry.

The $1,000 annual scholarship recognizes a student who demonstrates exceptional commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and responsible resource development—values that were central to Shpyth’s career and leadership.

Englot was chosen for her strong dedication to environmental sustainability and her vision for a responsible minerals industry in Saskatchewan. With hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture, forestry operations, and community-focused environmental work, Englot has developed a solid foundation in ecosystem management and resource planning. Her goal is to help the mining industry improve reclamation practices, reduce environmental impacts, and strengthen relationships with local and Indigenous communities—ensuring the sector remains both environmentally responsible and economically strong for future generations.

“We are excited to recognize Logan with the Al Shpyth Scholarship for Environmental Excellence,” said Lesley McGilp, Executive Director. “Her dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices reflects the values that Al championed throughout his career. It’s inspiring to see emerging leaders like Logan step forward with the vision, passion, and commitment needed to ensure Saskatchewan’s minerals industry continues to thrive responsibly.”

The Al Shpyth Scholarship for Environmental Excellence will be awarded annually for three years, beginning in 2025, to a student in Saskatchewan who is studying environmental disciplines and demonstrates a strong environmental conscience and interest in sustainable minerals development.
