The International Minerals Innovation Institute (IMII), in partnership with Acceleware Ltd., is advancing its multi-phase project to develop innovative, sustainable technologies for the minerals industry with the launch of Phase 3A of its radio frequency (RF) drying initiative. This phase will evaluate the potential of Acceleware’s Clean Tech Inverter (CTI) to dry potash ore using a single pass pilot unit, generating essential technical data on process performance, energy efficiency, and scalability.
Phase 3A builds on progress made in earlier stages of the project. Phase I established proof‑of‑concept through simulations and electromagnetic modeling, confirming that RF energy could dry potash ore to required levels. Phase II advanced the technology to a 100 kg/hr prototype, successfully reducing moisture and exploring key engineering and operational considerations, including system insulation, electrical safety, and energy efficiency. Together, these phases provided the technical foundation and confidence needed to move to a larger scale test that enables once-through testing.
“Phase 3A is a critical milestone that allows us to evaluate RF drying with a once-through configuration,” said Lesley McGilp, Executive Director of IMII. “The data generated from this phase will help inform future research and development and longer term, could support the adoption of technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency in mineral processing.”
Acceleware COO Mike Tourigny added: “We’re looking forward to testing how our Clean Tech Inverter’s precision RF energy performs in a once-through pilot environment. This phase will provide valuable insights into the potential of RF drying for the minerals industry.”
