Saskatoon, SK (Canada) – IMII is pleased to announce the finalists of the Alternative Energy Systems (AES) Innovation Challenge.

Two finalists – Anax Power and Growing Greener Innovations, have been selected to proceed to the Innovation Sprint phase and share the $500,000 prize.

Anax Power is a New Jersey-based clean energy technology company that builds, markets, and develops projects around the 500kW Anax Turboexpander (Anax Power – Clean energy from natural gas, without combustion).

Growing Greener Innovations is a Canadian energy technology company focused on engineering and manufacturing batteries, battery management systems, and battery energy storage solutions for residential, commercial and industrial customers. It is based in Edmonton, Alberta (Grengine™ Electric Generators – Portable, Silent & Fuel Free).

The two companies and their technologies will proceed to the next phase of the AES Innovation Challenge – the Innovation Sprint, where they will use their share of the $500,000 prize to advance their proposed solution to the point where IMII may select a winner to proceed for field testing. The Innovation Sprint is to conclude by the end of 2021.


Launched in October 2020, the AES Innovation Challenge attracted 10 applications from Canada and the United States.

With the support of subject matter experts from IMII’s member companies and technical reviewers from external parties, four applicants were shortlisted for presentations and interviews in February 2021. From these four – which included Hybrixcel, Inc. and a team made up of miEnergy, Lux Wind Power, Saskatchewan Polytechnic and Saskatchewan Research Council, the two finalists were selected for the potential their technology is a match to the AES Innovation Challenge:

The IMII, along with their member companies, are pursuing an Innovation Challenge that will provide an alternate energy system which will reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions, have a levelized energy cost on par with current practices, and will allow all members to collaborate at a pre-competitive level. Preference will be given to solutions that have been demonstrated at a pre-commercial scale in a field setting and can be deployed at a pilot scale within 24 to 36 months.
